Action Alert: Protect Your Journalists!

Freedom of speech is being contested in every country around the world. Our knowledge of issues beyond US borders informs our decisions — from who to vote into office to whether or not to buy gas from Shell or Exxon. When a journalist is imprisoned in Peru or a progressive radio station is denied a license to broadcast in Croatia, that access begins to erode.

The Canadian Committee to Protect Journalists provides regularly updated action alerts, as well as other journalism resource links from around the globe. Each case they highlight offers a listing of who you should contact and how to reach them if you want to get involved. AMARC’s International Solidarity Network provides updates on the successes and failures of worldwide community radio stations. Keep yourself informed: Protect your journalists.

“Lying.” “Disgusting.” “Scum.” “Slime.” “Corrupt.” “Enemy of the people.” Donald Trump has always made clear what he thinks of journalists. And it’s plain now that his administration intends to do everything it can to stop journalists from reporting things they don’t like—which is most things that are true.

No one gets to tell Mother Jones what to publish or not publish, because no one owns our fiercely independent newsroom. But that also means we need to directly raise the resources it takes to keep our journalism alive. There’s only one way for that to happen, and it’s readers like you stepping up. Please help with a donation today if you can—even a few bucks will make a real difference. A monthly gift would be incredible.
