Roughly 1 million American couples will marry this summer. At the same time, Gay Pride celebrants nationwide will rally for the rights of gay couples to do the same. Polls indicate that while the public supports equal rights in housing and employment, a majority of Americans oppose gay marriage. The 1996 Defense of Marriage Act specifically denies same-sex partners legal protections concerning child custody and domestic violence. Relationship LLC, a Delaware-based company, helps couples — same-sex or not — to incorporate as limited liability companies, a move that allows them to have joint credit cards and lease a car, among other benefits. The company has helped about 20 couples so far. LLCs are recognized by all 50 states and the federal government, as well as internationally.
