Autocratic forces are ascendant in America, but the story isn’t fully written. Truth-telling independent media is one remaining bulwark against the unrestrained exercise of power. If the Tea Party movement really is, as some organizers have put it, this generation’s Civil Rights movement, we should expect some decent music. In theory. But while the next Pete Seeger or Bob Dylan has yet to materialize, it hasn’t been for lack of effort: Conservative unrest with all things governmental has sparked an outpouring of musical expression.
