David Corn here, and I'm excited to invite Mother Jones readers to subscribe to my new newsletter, This Land. Twice weekly I send an email with my no-BS take on the news, but it's all the other behind-the-scenes and interactive features that make This Land different and fun. It's also a big experiment. After a free 30-day trial, we'll ask you to pay $5 a month to keep receiving This Land, as a new way to support Mother Jones’ journalism. Here’s more on why we think you’re going to love it, but—trust me— you should just take the plunge and sign up for a free trial today.

After ten days of airstrikes, Israel launched a ground incursion into Gaza Thursday, its first since 2009, when a three-week battle with Hamas left 1,400 Palestinians and 13 Israelis dead. Over the past ten days, Israeli shelling in Gaza has claimed the lives of 200 Palestinians; one Israeli was killed by shrapnel. Israel has activated 50,000 reserve troops and has said it plans to call up 18,000 more in what observers say could be a dangerous escalation of the conflict.
